AI-Assisted Identity Management

Identity solution

Connect a compatible AI assistant to NIM’s integrated Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to help with configuration, administration, and troubleshooting. Describe the task you want to accomplish, and work with the assistant to inspect and change your NIM configuration.

NIM’s MCP capability is available in the current release to all customers and is currently in preview. Use caution when enabling it and allowing AI agents to access or modify NIM. Administrators remain responsible for the changes they authorize and for identity and access decisions.

MCP gives an AI assistant a common way to discover and use tools provided by another application. NIM’s integrated MCP server makes selected NIM operations available to an authorized assistant for inspecting and changing configuration.

The MCP Server guide covers connections for Claude, ChatGPT, Antigravity, and other compatible MCP clients. The assistant and its AI service are separate from the on-premises NIM platform. Your choice of client and AI service determines where AI processing takes place and which connection capabilities are available.

Use an assistant to help turn an administrative task into a configuration you can inspect, validate, and refine. For example:

Configure systems and connectors

Explore connectors, prepare system configurations, test connections, and inspect collection status.

Example: “Show my configured systems and help me investigate a failed connection.”

Build and test filters

Define relations, select output columns, and build filters that combine data across systems. Test the resulting structure and, when permitted, returned rows.

Example: “Build a filter for HR employees without an Active Directory account.”

Configure NIM Apps

Create forms and grids, configure columns and buttons, and connect actions to supported system functions.

Example: “Create a user-management App with an edit form and a confirmation dialog.”

Inspect and troubleshoot

Examine configuration details, validate Apps, and investigate missing columns, broken actions, or incorrect bindings.

Example: “Check this App for validation errors and help me understand what needs attention.”

These are administrator-assisted tasks. An AI connection does not replace your organization’s provisioning policies or approval decisions. Available operations depend on the enabled tools and the capabilities of each connected system.

Deployment and access controlsDirect link to Deployment and access controls

NIM runs on premises. You can choose a compatible assistant backed by a local or cloud-based AI service, subject to that client’s MCP support and connection requirements.

  • Administrator-controlled enablement: The MCP endpoint is off by default; an administrator decides whether to enable it.
  • Authorized connections: Each assistant connection must authenticate. Tool tiers determine which tools are available to the connection.
  • Separate customer-data access: Customer row data is not returned by default. Access requires both administrator enablement and a connection that opts in. The technical guide limits this option to instances holding test data.
  • AI-service data handling: Information returned to the assistant is processed by the AI service you select. A cloud service can process that information outside your environment. Keeping NIM on premises does not by itself keep all AI interactions local.

Choose the AI service and permissions to match your organization’s data-handling requirements. See the technical guide for customer-data access controls and supported connection options.

Tool results return to the assistant for its response. Administrators retain responsibility for authorized actions and identity decisions.

The assistant can request real operations, including configuration changes, through the tools available to it. Keep its scope aligned with the task and your organization’s administrative processes.
