Configure Connection
Microsoft Exchange (On-Premise) guide
Prepare a standard user service account, configure the Exchange server and account in NIM, and test a remote PowerShell session.

Follow Microsoft's remote PowerShell connection instructions to prepare access from the NIM server to Exchange. Exchange role-based access control (RBAC) determines the cmdlets and parameters available to the account.
NIM requires Server Name and a Service Account. The account must be a standard domain user account, not a managed service account (MSA). Grant it the Exchange management permissions needed for your process.

- Create or select a dedicated standard domain user account for NIM's Exchange connection. An MSA cannot be used for this connector.
- Have your Exchange administrator enable remote PowerShell access for the account and assign the Exchange RBAC roles required by your mailbox, group membership, and permission processes.
- Confirm that the NIM server can reach the Exchange server's remote PowerShell endpoint. Use Microsoft's connection guide linked above to validate the environment and authentication prerequisites.
- Record the Exchange server's fully qualified domain name and choose how NIM will use the service account: as the NIM service identity or explicitly in the connection settings.

- In NIM Studio, open Systems > Overview and add a Microsoft Exchange (On-Premise) system, or select the existing system.
- Open its Connection screen.
- Configure the following values and save the connection.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Server Name | The fully qualified domain name of the Exchange server NIM will connect to, such as exchange01.example.com. |
| Service Account | A standard domain user account with the required Exchange permissions. Run the NIM service under this account or specify its credentials in the connection settings. |
When using the NIM service identity, ensure that the service runs under the intended standard user account. When specifying credentials in the connection, use the account authorized for remote Exchange management.
Test the remote PowerShell sessionDirect link to Test the remote PowerShell session
- Select Test Connection. NIM attempts to connect to the configured Exchange server using a PSSession and the selected service account.
- Confirm that the session connection succeeds. If it fails, check the Server Name, account credentials or service identity, remote PowerShell access, and network connectivity.
- Collect the system and inspect the collections needed by your process, such as Mailboxes, MailboxPermissions, and RemoteMailboxes.
- Validate intended mailbox, membership, and permission changes with safe test records before enabling scheduled automation or delegated App actions.
- For a hybrid process, validate remote mailbox changes and the corresponding recipient state in your Exchange Online environment.
A successful PSSession confirms that NIM can connect. Validate the permissions for each collection and intended write operation separately.
