Configure Connection
Tableau guide
Prepare Tableau API access, configure the connection and site settings in NIM, and test access by retrieving one site user.

Review the Tableau REST API documentation and its authentication guidance. Arrange an account with the site permissions required for your user, group, and project processes.
NIM requires Tenant URL, API Version, and Content URL, along with the Username and Password used by the connector's sign-in request.
The public Tableau connector currently signs in with a username and password, and sends an empty contentUrl in its sign-in payload even though it exposes a Content URL setting. Confirm that your installed version applies the intended site before using a non-default site. Tableau Cloud with Tableau authentication and MFA requires a supported token-based sign-in method; this public connector's sign-in configuration does not implement PAT authentication.

- Follow the Tableau documentation linked above to prepare REST API access for your deployment.
- Confirm that the integration account can read site users, groups, memberships, and projects, and perform the intended provisioning operations.
- Obtain the Tableau tenant hostname, a REST API version supported by the deployment and connector, and the target site's Content URL.
- Verify that the installed connector's authentication method and site targeting work with that site before proceeding.
Enter the connection settingsDirect link to Enter the connection settings
- In NIM Studio, open Systems > Overview and add a Tableau system, or select the existing system.
- Open its Connection screen.
- Enter the following settings and save the connection.
| NIM setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Tenant URL | The Tableau tenant hostname. The public connector adds https://, so enter the hostname without a protocol or trailing path. For Tableau Cloud, use the correct pod hostname. |
| API Version | A REST API version supported by your deployment and connector. The public connector provides 3.9 as its default; verify compatibility before changing it. |
| Content URL | The site's URL subpath used for sign-in, rather than the full site URL or site ID. Verify the installed connector's handling as noted above. |
| Username | The account name used for Tableau REST API sign-in. |
| Password | The password belonging to that account, where this sign-in method is supported by your deployment. |
Test site-user accessDirect link to Test site-user access
-
Select Test Connection. NIM attempts to retrieve a site user with this request:
GET /api/{api_version}/sites/{site_id}/users?pageSize=1&pageNumber=1{api_version}is the configured API Version.{site_id}is obtained from the sign-in response. The request retrieves the first page with a page size of one user. -
Confirm that the test succeeds and that the authenticated site is the intended site. If it fails, check the tenant hostname, API version, credentials, site targeting, and account permissions.
-
Collect the system and inspect Users, Groups, GroupUsers, and Projects.
-
Validate the collected projects for your audit, and test intended user and membership changes with safe records before enabling automation.
The connection test reads site-user data. Validate the other collections and each intended write operation separately.
