Snapshots
Underneath the Snapshots tab, administrators can create and manage NIM snapshots. A NIM snapshot is a complete backup of the currently installed version of NIM and its configuration data, which can be used to either revert the current installation back to a previous state, or to migrate the current installation to a different server.
When a snapshot is created, the snapshot contains the following information:
All configuration information, such as preferences, email settings, jobs, schedules, etc.
All internal databases, such as the authorization and auditing databases.
NIM and system credentials.
Snapshots do not include the following information:
System table data
Job and scheduling results
Log files
Manually Create a Snapshot
You can manually create a snapshot by navigating to the Settings > Snapshots tab and clicking Create snapshot. A dialog box will appear to confirm the activity, and warns that maintenance mode will be enabled while the snapshot is in progress.
Once the snapshot is complete, NIM will exit maintenance mode and a new snapshot will appear in the list.
Restore a Snapshot
You can restore your installation of NIM back to a previous version in the case of a failed upgrade or other scenario that requires the entire NIM installation to be rolled back to a previous version. Restoring a snapshot—as opposed to just running an older installer—allows the environment's configuration files to be reverted back to their previous versions, as the upgraded versions of those configuration files may not be backwards-compatible.
To restore to a snapshot, navigate to Settings > Snapshots and find the snapshot you wish to revert to. Click the restore button next to it to begin the restoration process. A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the restoration. You may also choose to create a snapshot of the current configuration before restoring (recommended).
While the restoration is in progress, NIM will enter maintenance mode. When the restoration is complete, NIM will exit maintenance mode.
Migrate NIM via Snapshot
Snapshots can be used to migrate your installation of NIM from one server to another. Before beginning migration, make sure that NIM is installed on the target server. Then, follow these steps:
Create a new snapshot.
Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Tools4ever\NIM\sysdata\snapshots\snapshots and find the folder belonging to the new snapshot.
Copy the folder to the same location on the target server.
On the target server, follow the steps to restore a snapshot using the snapshot that you copied over.
Once the snapshot is restored, perform an import of all target systems and use the validation tool to ensure everything is in working order.
